Back to Basics: Fashion Illustration and Fabric Rendering

As a fashion illustrator, it is always important to remember the secrets to fashion illustration through the secret art of fabric rendering. In order to capture the correct fabric type on paper, one must understand the elemental properties of each type of fabric. How does it shine in the light? How heavy is it? How does it drape? How does it sway? By understanding these elements, one can better understand how to draw that fabric.

Lace/Lace Embroidery:

Lace or Lace Embroidery tends to have a shear mess underneath it in which it is attached to.

1. Put a swatch of mesh under the paper.

2. Lightly rub on top of the paper with the proper colored pencil (desired color of mesh).

3.Remove mesh from under the paper.

4. Draw lace embroidery on top of the rubbed parts.

  • Note, when in a shaded area, lace embroidery should be lighter and when in a highlighted area, lace embroidery should be darker. If this action isn't performed, the overall feel of the fabric will not look like lace. Rather, it will blend in like a pattern.

Velvet:

When velvet reflects light, it reflects it on the edges of the folds and creases, rather than in the middle of the fabric. Also, velvet is soft. It creates a hazy or out of focus quality around the edges of the fabric. As a result, make sure that the edges of the velvet and all the highlighted areas are fuzzy and not sharp. They should be more smudged, rather than an straight/hard line.

1. Color in the edges of the folds lighter.

  • The light reflects the most on the edges of the folds, not in the center of the folds.

2. Color in the center of the folds darker.

  • On velvet, light does not reflect off the center of the folds, so the centers should be darker/darkest.

2. All throughout, while doing so, take a clear blender marker and make sure to constantly rub it along the edges of the contrasting colors.

  • This will give it the fuzzy effect that is needed so it looks like velvet.
